The Mysteries Procession
Every Good Friday, for more than four hundred years, Trapani has repeated the old and much loved tradition of the procession of the Holy Groups, the so-called “Mysteries”.
These are twenty sculpted works, made of fabric, wood and glue, illustrating the phases of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. The statues were produced in the 17th century and the 18th century by local artists and feature highly expressive faces and good carving. They are kept all year round in the church of the Purgatorio from which they emerge at 2 pm on Good Friday and to where they are returned at the end of the procession on the morning. The statues are placed on a wooden base and adorned with silver and floral compositions before being carried on shoulder through the city with the characteristic “annacata” as the bearers move to the music played by the bands.
The procession winds along a two kilometres route and sees the participation of thousands of citizens and tourists who come to Trapani from all parts of the world to witness this fascinating religious event. During this day, the town changes its appearance showing a charming blend of the holy and the folklore that has remained unaltered for centuries.
